What does a scale and polish involve?

Polishing is done using a slow speed hand-piece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Prophylaxis paste – a special gritty toothpaste-like material – is scooped up like ice cream into the cup and spun around on the teeth to make them shiny smooth.

Polishing removes unsightly staining from teeth enamel. In most cases enamel discoloration is caused by food pigments: tea, coffee, red wine, berries and of course smoking.

Does polish hurt?

A polish is a painless procedure with many patients reporting ‘tickling’ or ‘scraping’ sensations. It is likely to be painful if you have sore gums, badly worn teeth or a dental practitioner who is less than gentle.

Polishing paste comes in different flavors and grits. We always ask our patients what flavor they prefer and make their polishing experience pleasant and tasty.
